Most of my life, I never really thought of myself as a “natural” sort of girl, but thankfully, I’ve been becoming a little more thoughtful over the past couple of years about what comes into (and out of) our house. And I’m actually quite enjoying the journey. We’ve switched a lot of the foods we use regularly for healthier alternatives and a much less processed fridge and pantry and we gathered up several bags of leaves from our backyard just this weekend for compost!
But the biggest and maybe most satisfying change I’m making is to gradually switch all my beauty products over to natural cosmetics from Beautycounter. I had been hearing the buzz for a while, and I don’t really know why I hesitated for so long. I felt like it probably wasn’t a great idea to put a bunch of unregulated chemicals into my skin’s pores, but I think I was just attached to my products of choice and didn’t want to spend a fortune overhauling my medicine cabinet.
Then, I read a post by my friend Lisa about joining Beautycounter that finally gave me the push I needed. Beautycounter doesn’t use over 1,500 harmful and questionable substances that are not necessarily banned by U.S. law. The part that really got me thinking was that over 1,400 of those ingredients are, in fact, banned by the European Union, whereas we only ban 30 in the U.S. But the good news is that Beautycounter (and many other organic cosmetic companies) have stepped in to provide safe products anyway! Hooray!
I don’t claim to have researched the risks of all of those 1,500 substances or to have found out which ones were in the products I was using. But what it came down to for me was this: if I like Beautycounter products just as much as the other stuff I was using, and I know that I trust them to ensure what I’m putting on my face is safe, why would I not just order from them?
The verdict? I love them! Lisa was so sweet to send me some samples, and I had so much fun trying them all out! I was immediately impressed with how great my skin looked and felt after using them. As a new mom, having some new products felt like such a luxurious reminder to take care of myself too. Plus, they don’t just sell the basics. They have a product to replace pretty much everything I was using before, and I love all the options! So, to avoid the won’t-this-be-super-expensive problem, I started the slow process of using up my old cosmetics and ordering replacements from Beautycounter instead.
So far, here are some products I have been loving:
- The Charcoal Cleansing Bar: I keep this in the shower to wash my face with my Clarisonic, and my skin feels so squeaky clean!
- The Nourishing Day Cream: (And the Nourishing Night Cream) This is just a great all-purpose moisturizer that really calms my skin and doesn’t leave it feeling greasy.
- Countermatch Eye Rescue Cream: I’ve been using undereye cream since junior high thanks to my mama’s insistence that you can never start the wrinkle prevention process too soon, and this is probably my favorite one I’ve ever tried!
Next, I am definitely looking at my make-up. I already replaced my mascara with a Beautycounter alternative, and I love their new bright shades of lipstick! Also, they have a whole line of safe products for kids and babies, so you know where we’ll be turning when Victoria runs out of baby wash. 🙂
I do still use disposable diapers and rarely buy organic produce, but this switch has made me feel really great about not having to think about whether I’m putting scary substances into my skin anymore, and I’m so happy to be loving my new products so much in the process!
Note: The links in this post are affiliate links, so if you click on them and decide to give Beautycounter a try, I get some rewards in the form of free Beautycounter products–which I want, because my love for their products is all real! I’m not a consultant, but Lisa is the best!
Has anyone else tried safer beauty products? I’d love to hear about your favorites!
